Utility Partners of America (UPA), an electric, gas and water utility solutions provider, has received authorization to proceed with the full-scale deployment of an electric and water smart meter installation for customers of Glendale Water and Power (GWP).

UPA has completed the installation of network devices during the first phase of the initiative.

The company will install Itron’s OpenWay Smart Grid technology for GWP’s 84,500 electric customers and Itron’s Water SaveSource for 33,400 water customers.

In addition, UPA will install leak-detecting sensors, also from Itron, that will be used to continuously monitor GWP’s entire water system.

UPA CEO Mike Cale said that the main deployment phase of the project is scheduled to be completed in September 2011.
