A report in the industry press suggests that UK retail heavyweight Tesco is to fit its self service checkouts with Chip & PIN technology.

CardLine Europe reports that Tesco is to fit the automated tills with the Chip & PIN readers throughout the course of this year, and all 285 checkouts should be equipped with the keypads and terminals by November.

Currently none are thus fitted. CardLine’s report says that Tesco has lagged behind other operators of self-service tills, including forecourt giant Shell and fellow retailer Marks & Spencer.

Retailers are now responsible for any fraud committed at a point of sale terminal where Chip & PIN is not operational; however some doubts remain as to precisely how secure the new system is.

Shell recently temporarily withdrew from the Chip & PIN system after it was the victim of an identity fraud scam involving tampered keypads.
