US-based utility Tampa Electric has chosen energy solutions provider Trilliant to lay the ground work for a smart network in the US state of Florida .

The network is expected to help deliver the benefits of a smarter energy grid to about 676,000 households and businesses in the utility’s territory in West Central Florida.

Tampa Electric will deploy Trilliant’s broadband mesh networking system called SecureMesh Wide-Area Network (WAN), which is built for advanced distribution applications.

Trilliant America’s managing director Walter Lowes said smart grid would help in maintaining flexibility for future applications.

"This project highlights the tangible need for advanced smart grid solutions that can help customers realize the benefits of smarter energy from a variety of entry points," Lowes added.

"While the American utility industry has been focused on smart meters recently, there are many other ways to start modernizing the grid, including starting with distribution automation first."
