Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) has said that the key question is how to encourage investment in renewable energy technologies which already have the scale to make a substantial contribution to meeting energy needs by 2020. The company feels that the solution, as set out in the new government strategy, is to maintain and extend the Renewables Obligation.

SSE has said that since the Renewables Obligation was launched in 2002, capacity for generating power from renewable sources in the UK has tripled, with more projects in the development pipeline.

The main barrier to realizing them, according to SSE, is not a lack of will to invest, but a failure to tackle isses such as unnecessary delays in the planning system.

The removal of such barriers, and a sustained commitment to the Renewables Obligation, will provide the best prospect for attracting the necessary investment to achieve the country’s new energy targets, according to the electricity generator.
