The extension is expected to allow the company to operate the plants at the power stations which were opted into the directive; while completing the installation of flue gas desulphurization equipment, which is expected before the end of 2008.

In practice, on a weighted and pro-rated basis, the extension till October 15, 2008, would allow Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) to increase from 1,270 to 1,397, the number of hours it is able to operate the opted-in plant at each of the power stations.
