The $640m Amager Bakke power plant, which opened in March 2017, uses municipal solid waste as its primary fuel source for its operations.
Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) provided the initial master plan of the rooftop activity park at the power plant. On the other hand, the design of the park has been provided by Danish landscape architecture firm SLA.
The green rooftop activity park, which is slated to be completed in September 2018, is expected to provide outdoor activities that include hiking trails, street fitness, trail running, vantage points, climbing walls and shelters.
Additionally, it will boast of the ski slopes with a height of over 500m that have been designed by BIG.
SLA said that the slope of the roof being extremely steep meant that the planting design and the landscape construction was not easy at all. Furthermore, complicated wind and weather conditions make it difficult for trees and plants to survive, 88m up in the air.
Other issues also had to be addressed such as the heat coming from the energy boilers under the roof alongside certain security and safety demands that had to be met.
SLA partner Rasmus Astrup said: “The project to create an attractive and green activity rooftop park on top of Amager Bakke has been very challenging.
“Not only because of the extreme natural – and unnatural – conditions of the site and the rooftop itself, which put severe stress on plants, trees and landscape. But also because we’ve had to ensure that the rooftop’s many activities are realized in an accessible, intuitive and inviting manner.”
