Meralco will assess the viability of constructing the plant, for which Shell companies in the Philippines (SciP) will supply gas, according to GMA Network.

Both Shell’s proposed LNG regasification terminal and Meralco’s gas-powered plant will be situated in Batangas near Shell’s Tabangao Refinery Plant.

Commenting on the deal, Shell country chairman Edgar Chua said, "This agreement opens the door for greater use of cleaner energy and enhanced energy security for the Philippines."

Meralco PowerGen executive vice-president and general manager Aaron Domingo was quoted by the news agency as saying that the purpose of an LNG-based combined cycle power plant is fuel diversification.

"This collaboration with SCiP helps pave the way for facilities that ensure a reliable and competitively-priced power supply," Domingo said.
