RWE-owned energy supplier nPower has launched a campaign to get UK workplaces to switch off during the August bank holiday weekend to help save some of the GBP1 billion worth of energy wasted every year.

The company has launched a website to promote The Big Switch Off, asking businesses across the country to pledge their support for saving energy by switching off switching off unused computers and lights in the office. New npower business customers will receive an energy efficiency pack with advice on how to save energy and an ‘electrisave monitor’ to measure their usage on a daily basis.

Gordon Parsons, managing director at npower business, said: Small changes can make a huge difference – for every one degree reduction in building temperatures, 8% can be saved on heating bills and every GBP75 of energy saved avoids the release of a ton of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

The campaign will focus around the August bank holiday so that workers are aware that by leaving their PC on stand-by or not turning the printer off before leaving for the three-day break, they are wasting energy, the company said.
