Tehri dam feels the brunt of seismic concerns after Gujarat earthquake

In the aftermath of the Gujarat earthquake, India’s Prime Minister has ordered a fresh seismic survey of the Tehri dam, under construction in the Himalayas, to determine if it could withstand an earthquake of the same intensity.

The announcement surprised the dam’s developers, who have already undertaken a number of seismic surveys for the project. They say that the survey could stir up trouble with environmentalists who have been campaigning against the dam for ten years and had now been reconciled to its completion.
