Powergrid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) has awarded a contract to Alstom T&D India and Alstom Grid UK for the supply and refurbishment of high voltage direct current (HVDC) converter transformers.

The €22.75m turnkey contract includes designing, engineering, production, refurbishment, erection and commissioning of 234 MVA, 400 kV HVDC converter transformers, which will strengthen the 1000MW HVDC station at Bhadrawati in Maharashtra, which interconnects and moves surplus power from West India to South India.

The converter transformers will specifically replace Bhadrawati’s old transformers, and also extend the life of the existing substation.

Alstom T&D India managing director Rathin Basu said the company’s future-ready, high quality HVDC products and solutions are pivotal to bulk power transport in India.

"With our world class transformer facilities across Vadodara, Gujarat and Naini, Uttar Pradesh in India, Alstom offers the widest range of fully localised Alternating Current and HVDC transformer solutions up to 800 kV," Basu added.

Transformers production is sceduled to be carried out at Alstom’s facilities in Vadodara, India and in Stafford, UK.
