Polish oil company PKN Orlen has adjudicated on a tender for supplies of bio-ethanol in the second quarter of 2008. The majority of volumes will be secured from Polish suppliers. All bio-ethanol suppliers have been selected through an internet auction.

The invitation to tender was sent to all Polish and European Union producers holding the necessary certificates. The key criterion, in addition to the formal and quality requirements, was price and supply terms and conditions.

In order to diversify bio-ethanol sources, PKN Orlen chose eight contractors which offered the most favorable conditions. They include Hungrana KFT, CropEnergies, Bioetanol AEG, PHP Wieslaw Wawrzyniak, PG Surwin, Uni-Malew, Cargill and Go Germania Oil Polska.

The companies will secure almost 74.5 million liters required in Q2 2008, with Polish produced bio-ethanol accounting for 55% of total volume. PKN Orlen uses bio-ethanol for petroleum blending and as a raw material for the production of ethyl tert-butyl ether.
