The demand for electricity in central and southeast Europe has risen even as power generators in the region, mostly designed and built in the Soviet era, are taken out of service.

Paks nuclear power plant, which is known as the 1,970 megawatt, has submitted its plan to extend the lifespan of the reactors in November 2008. Hungary may spend as much as EUR4 billion to increase the capacity of the power plant, Nepszabadsag reported.
