The Mkuju River project is the first uranium project in the country to have been awarded the mining approval. The license was secured by Mantra Tanzania, a subsidiary of Mantra Resources that was wholly acquired by Russian uranium company AtomRedMetZoloto (ARMZ) in 2012.
However, the federal government has claimed a debt of $205.8m in taxes related to the acquisition of Mkuju River project that comprises $196m as capital gains tax and $9.8m as stamp duty.
During a talk in Parliament, Deputy Minister for Energy and Minerals Stephen Maselle told that the government and company are to agree on some pending issues, according to Allafrica.com.
"We have already submitted our proposals. The offer is on the table, to take it or leave it," added Maselle.
ARMZ, meanwhile, has challenged the government’s charges and appointed FB Attorneys taking the case to Tax Appeals Tribunal of Tanzania.
