Power Secretary P Uma Shankar was quoted by Press Trust of India as saying that the nation requires proper transmission planning to avoid a situation that could result in widespread power failure.

"Although a lot of generation capacity is coming up in states, there is no proper transmission plan," Shankar added.

"We need to look at regulation to see that transmission is done properly. We need to ensure that (power) generating stations need to ask for medium and long term open access, that is why transmission planning is required.

"We need to ensure that generating stations look into grid connectivity. We are looking at changing the regulations to see how this can be effective."

PowerGrid, the central power utility takes care of the transmission needs of the country. In addition to connecting the grid, the transmission has to be directional, Shankar noted.
