Spanish multinational electric utility Iberdrola has collaborated with Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación to jointly develop a high resolution wind simulation project - Sedar Project.

The new project is expected to develop a new computer model to improve estimates of electrical energy production in windfarms before their construction, the company said.

This project has overcome the current models’ limitation in the calculation of times, by employing supercomputing techniques.

Iberdrola noted that the Sedar Project is expected to design new windfarms that can be installed with guarantees and will also provide suitable locations for installing the wind turbines and reduce the uncertainty involved in investing in this type of study with the use of Alya Green software.

This phase of the project, which can be applied in onshore and offshore wind farms over the future, is expected to be a key technological advancement for the wind industry, which is essential in the short term.

The Barcelona Supercomputing Center – Centro Nacional de Supercomputación is a leading supercomputing center in Spain, and offers high-performance computing.
