The facility uses steam-assisted process to extract 10,000 barrels per day (bpd).

Husky Energy CEO Asim Ghosh said: "Rush Lake is the latest in a series of long life, low sustaining capital thermal projects we are advancing in our heavy oil business.

"Five years ago, we had two heavy oil thermal projects in production and by the end of 2016, we will have ten projects onstream."

The project is a part of the company’s effort to boost its production capacity from thermal projects to approximately 78,500bpd from the current 44,000bpd over the next 18 months.

The company intends to start production of the 10,000bpd Edam East project in the third quarter of 2016 and the 10,000bpd Vawn project in the fourth quarter the same year.

Husky Energy will also commission the upgraded Edam West thermal development in the fourth quarter of 2016.
