Hitachi Power Systems America has secured a contract from Westar Energy for the design and supply of a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system for its Jeffrey Energy Center, Unit 1, located in the US state of Kansas.

Under the contract, Hitachi will design and supply of a SCR system for the St Marys station’s 800MW gross coal-fired unit which utilizes Powder River Basin coal as its source of fuel.

SCR systems reduce nitrogen oxide emissions, a contributor to the formation of urban ozone and smog.

Westar said Hitachi solution will allow the company to reach its NOx reduction requirements, while keeping SO3 emissions low.
