The proposed JV will provide immediate remediation of the Yabucoa landfill that has been closed since 2011.

Immediate steps to be taken under the agreement include – slope stabilization, construction of new road access and internal roadways, run-off and flood control to ensure the site is in compliance with regulatory standards of the authorities in Puerto Rico.

The terms of the agreement also includes plans for accelerated development of a recycling facility and waste-to-energy conversion plant to generate about 15MW energy.

Green Energy Renewable Solutions CEO Joe DuRant said, "We believe this joint venture is a tremendous opportunity to use our unique landfill diversion and energy conversion strategies to address the immediate needs of Yabucoa and the surrounding communities."

The landfill will be leased to the JV at zero-cost for a period of 30 years and when complete will process 1,000t of municipal solid waste per day

Work on the estimated $100m project is expected to commence immediately, with estimated reopening of the landfill in 120 to 180 days.
