Rancia 2 was refurbished as part of a €500m industrial plan for the development of geothermal energy in Tuscany.

Enel Green Power CEO Francesco Starace said, "These works show our commitment to the continuous search for the improvement of the existing power fleet whereas, at the same time, we maintain our involvement in further increasing our generation capacity globally by putting new plants into operation."

The plant will generate about 150mKW hours of power, saving the equivilent of 100,000t of CO2.

Work is currently in progress on on the Rancia 1 and Le Prata plants, located in the towns of Radicondoli, Siena and Castelnuovo VC, Pisa, Italy.
