Electrobras is considering whether to resume work on the 11,000MW Belo Monte hydro power plant on the Xingu river in the Amazon region of Brazil. The R$6B (US$3.4M) plant will be offered to the private sector in 2003, and will be completed in 2009 on a build-operate-transfer concession basis. Electrobras may hold a minority interest in the project.

Other power plants to be built on the Xingu river are: Altamira (6600MW), Ipixuna (1900MW), Kokra- imoro (1500MW) and the Jarina project (620MW).
