The well, which was drilled by the Discoverer Americas rig, is located in the Walker Ridge 969 block.

This is the company’s first discovery in the deep waters of the US Gulf Coast, and Ecopetrol holds a 20% interest in the project which is operated by Statoil.

Ecopetrol said the US Gulf Coast is one of the focus areas of its international exploration strategy.

The company, through its subsidiary Ecopetrol America, holds stake in a total of 112 blocks in this region.

Ecopetrol CEO Javier Gutierrez said the company’s US subsidiary is in the process of establishing a solid position in the US Gulf Coast.
