The Daxia hydropower station, located on the Yellow river, China’s second longest, has begun to generate power. The plant, which is 65 km northeast of Lanzhou, capital of Gansu Province, has four 75 MW units and one 24 MW generating unit.

The project, which was a key element in China’s eighth five year plan which ran from 1991 to 1995, also supplies irrigation water, and is designed to improve navigation along the river
