UK nuclear specialist British Energy is poised to sell one of the few non-atomic plants in its portfolio, the 1,960MW Eggborough station in northern England, reports claim.

The Business newspaper has reported that BE could net around GBP400 million from the sale, although the report adds that this is less than half the face value of the station. This is apparently due to the ownership rights that certain bondholders have over the facility, which relates to the financial meltdown of British Energy in 2002.

Any sale could well interest the big finance houses, with institutional investors coming to the fore in recent power plant disposals in the UK.

British Energy dismissed the report as pure speculation.
