Beijing’s economic planning body has said that the city will increase the use of renewable energy to 2.6 million metric tons of coal equivalent by 2010 and 7.2 million tons by 2020.

As per the U.S. Department of Energy data, China led the list of emitter of greenhouse gases from burning oil and coal in 2006, followed by the US, Russia, India and Japan. China aims to reduce the energy used per unit of gross domestic product by 20% in the five years through 2010.

China also aims to boost its solar power capacity to 10 gigawatt (GW) by 2020 from 1.8 (GW) earlier.
