The retrofit, scheduled to commence in September 2013, would increase efficiency and extend the lifetime of the hard coal-fired plant that entered service in 1994, Alstom said.

The Rostock plant has an electrical output of 553MW and produces 150 MW of thermal power for the district heating grid of Rostock city.

Alstom noted the power plant currently generates more than half of the overall produced energy in the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and is of importance to the regional energy supply and grid stability.

As per the deal, Alstom has committed to meet the delivery time of the components to the date of the planned outage and will execute the installation work in parallel with the overhaul works.
