•Tanzania’s power shortages appear to have eased this year and hydro reservoirs are filling up. Sources at the Tanzanian Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) have reported that the reservoir impounded by the Metra dam, one of Tanzania’s major hydro power sources, is nearly full. In November 2000, Tanesco introduced power rationing countrywide due to low hydro reservoir levels.
•Uganda has split the state-owned Uganda Electricity Board (UEB) into three separate companies, prior to selling off the utility to the private sector by the end of the year. The split created separate generation, transmission and distribution companies. UEB has reduced its power supply outages following commissioning of two 40MW extensions to the 180MW Nalubale dam – formerly the Owen Falls dam.
•Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO) says that it is taking remedial action to prevent geological movements of about 2mm per year from affecting the 900MW Kafue Gorge power station and dam. ZESCO has undertaken a programme of drilling and anchoring the rock adjacent to the dam.
