The first waste canister containing highly radioactive spent nuclear fuel from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine has been successfully processed and will now be safely stored for at least a 100 years.
This important milestone represents the culmination of more than 20 years of work at the plant.
ISF-2 is the world’s largest facility designed to safely process and store spent nuclear fuel extracted from the the Chernobyl nuclear power plant (ChNPP) reactors 1,2 and 3.
The facility is funded by an EBRD-managed international donor fund, the Nuclear Safety Account.
The EBRD manages the ISF-2 project. The Bank’s Nuclear safety team have over 25 years’ experience in the management and implementation of complex multi-donor funded nuclear safety projects.
