Xstrata is planning to expand its mining and production operations, and halt copper smelting and refining operations at its Mount Isa mine located in Townsville, Australia.

Xstrata will develop new mines along with expanding the mining operations of the existing ones at Mount Isa, including the continuation of lead smelting and the expansion of port facilities in Townsville.

The firm is investing a total of A$463m ($491.6m) to expand its zinc-lead mining operations at Mount Isa with four development projects currently under construction, and a further A$300m ($318.5m) for potential expansions under evaluation.

The firm is also investing A$274m ($290m) for George Fisher mine expansion and A$113m ($119m) for the expansion of Black Star Deeps open pit mine.

Xstrata will submit an environmental management plan to the Queensland government outlining and seeking endorsement for Mount Isa Mines operations.
