The World Commission on Dams (WCD) has jointly won the Zayed International Prize For The Environment.

The commission shares the award with Professor Mohamed El-Kassas, a scientist and conservationist at the University of Cairo.

The Zayed Prize jury nominated WCD for the award for its ‘groundbreaking work that can serve as a model for addressing such a complex issue as dams and water resource management’, and particularly for addressing environmental and socio-economic issues such as the equitable management of shared water resources.

WCD has pledged to use its US$150,000 award as an incentive to ‘further the multi-sectoral consensus-building approach that it has pioneered over the past two years and to ensure that dissemination, implementation and understanding of its collaborative work continues long after the WCD shuts down its offices at the end of March 2001.’
