Work has begun to install two of the largest wind turbines in the world in 45 meters of sea water off the east coast of Scotland.

The project is a joint venture between Talisman Energy and Scottish and Southern Energy, one of the more proactive UK utilities when it comes to developing green power.

If the initial testing of two turbines proves successful, a bigger windfarm could be built. Talisman predicts that ultimately the farm could generate as much as 1GW of power, with some of this output going to provide electricity to operate nearby gas and oil platforms.

The project is costing GBP35 million and lies 25km off the east coast of Scotland.
