Vestas has unveiled a new range of technology upgrades aimed at improving the performance of its installed wind turbines by up to 5%.

The Vestas PowerPlus modifications are designed to extend the cutout speed and implement aerodynamic upgrades.

Power Uprate is applicable to V82-1.65 MW, V90-1.8 MW and V100-1.8 MW turbines.

Vestas said the 1.8MW can be uprated to 2MW and the 1.65MW turbines to 1.8MW, which means an annual output increase of 1% to 4%.

The extended cut out is a modification to the control that increases the turbine’s maximum wind speed limit from 25m/s to 30m/s that can result in an increased annual output of 0.5% to 2% and are applicable to the V90-3MW and the V100-1.8/2MW turbines..

The aerodynamic upgrades will feature vortex generators, which are small fins that are attached to the blades to improve their aerodynamics resulting in an output increase of up to 0.8% and are available for the V82-1.65MW.

Vestas chief technology officer Anders Vedel said the Vestas PowerPlus technology solutions are part of the company’s overall strategy of increasing its service business and to respond to a customer demand to increase power output while maintaining high reliability.

"So far Vestas PowerPlus™ has been very well received by customers, particularly in North America where we expect the fastest impact on sales," Vedel said.
