US Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz has unveiled the Department of Energy’s goal of doubling the country’s hydropower by 2030.

Moniz unveiled plans in a speech to industry gathered at the National Hydropower Association’s (NHA) annual conference in Washington, DC.

According to Moniz, hydropower, which is already the country’s largest source of renewable electricity, is an important part of President Barack Obama’s all-of-the-above energy strategy.

Moniz said, "Hydropower can double its contributions by the year 2030. We have to pick up the covers off of this hidden renewable that’s right in front of our eyes and continues to have significant potential."

The DOE has also formed a new partnership with the industry to develop a long-term vision for the future of hydropower in the US.

The developments over the next year will establish the analytical basis for a roadmap in sustainable domestic hydropower over the next fifty years.
