The two operators expect to have the first buses delivered by the end of 2012 with a target of 500 to be reached by 2015.

Uruguay President Jose Mujica said, "I am looking forward to seeing electric vehicle technology in this country as we are very devoted to the protection of the environment."

Buquebus president Juan Carlos Lopez Mena added that he was looking to replace his entire tourism vehicles fleet with electric-energy buses.

The buses to be procured can cover a distance of over 250kms on a single charge, consuming below 100kWh per 100kms.

"Promoting electric vehicles not only contributes to environmental protection and economic recovery, but it also improves Uruguay’s energy security," concluded CTS Auto president Sasson Attie.
