Bermuda's privately-owned utility company Bermuda Electric Light (BEL) is proposing the use of an underwater generator to harness ocean currents for electricity.

According to BEL, the proposed underwater generator would provide more than 8% of Bermuda’s current electricity demand, but it will not damage sea life, including ocean reefs. The plant operating at a depth of 75 to 200m would take advantage of constant ocean currents off Bermuda, and could be more efficient than large wind turbines.

The project, if viable, would assist Bermuda in becoming less reliant on fossil fuel as an energy source.
