The UK Government has proposed measures to make electric vehicle chargepoints more widely available for motorists.
The plans are part of the government's commitment towards improving green mobility options for people and air quality.
The Department for Transport is consulting on a series of measures that will make chargepoints more accessible.
The move will make it easier for drivers to recharge as demand for low emission vehicles increases.
The measures are due to be included in the Modern Transport Bill.
The UK government has recently pledged to invest more than £600m over this Parliament session to further encourage ultra low emissions vehicle market. In last two years, the ultra low emissions vehicle market registered a growth rate of 250%.
The government plans to take measures which not only increase the number of charging and hydrogen-fuelling stations, but also give out information about the same to the general public.
The measures include, making sure that drivers can charger their vehicles without anytime, anywhere by setting common standards for all charging stations. Make information available about chargepoints to public by creating an online database and through mobile apps.
To ensure drivers of EVs have access to chargepoints without the need for multiple memberships or subscriptions from different providers. To setup a consistent and transparent pricing system for consumers at charging stations and at hydrogen fuel stations.
Creating a ‘smart’ electric vehicle charging which is flexible enough to support grid demands.
The measures also include a provision to make chargepoints and hydrogen fuelling stations to be available at regular petrol or diesel fuel stations and at motorway service areas.
Secretary of State for Transport Chris Grayling said: “We are committed to making transport cleaner and giving even more drivers the option of using a low emission vehicle as we strive to improve air quality across the country.
“Our ambition is for nearly all new cars and vans to be zero emission by 2040, and we are taking real steps to achieve this in the Modern Transport Bill. We now want to hear the views of businesses and the wider public.”
