China has placed the Three Gorges dam on flood alert, after days of heavy rain and landslides reportedly killed at least 100 people in the country.

According to the Xinhua news agency, water levels at the dam were above warning levels and were raising, resulting in the massive project being closed to shipping for the first time since it began operation in June last year.

Since the rains began, more than 450,000 people have been evacuated from the most severely affected areas, and 127,000 homes damaged, says reports in the China Daily.
