AKK17, which is the company’s first shallow gas exploration well in its 2014 programme, has been drilled to a depth of 653m and encountered a 4m interval of gas bearing Tasaran sand with an average porosity of 31%.

The well is expected to be flowed, as part of a testing programme, after further wells have been drilled, noted Tethys.

Tethys Petroleum COO Graham Wall said the success of the AKK17 well once again shows that geological model and geophysical interpretation of these sandstones is robust.

"This well will contribute significantly to our planned increased gas production and we are pushing forward with the rest of the programme," Wall added.

The company plans to drill around 10 new wells, based on the latest seismic data, as well as workovers and tie-ins, as part of the 204 programme, according to Tethys.
