The Sunday Business Post newspaper reports that, despite operating only a small number of forecourts, UK retail giant Tesco is carving itself a significant niche in the fuel retail sector in Ireland.

The newspaper cites industry figures that point to the chain enjoying a market share of between 6 and 9%, a share that is on the increase thanks to its aggressive pricing policy.

The report goes on to suggest that Tesco could yet further expand through the purchase of part of market leader Statoil’s forecourt network, which is currently on the market. Statoil accounts for around a fifth of the Irish fuel retail sector.
