NUCLEAR

Swedish courts will decide whether the Sydkraft has the right to delay the closure of one reactor at its Barseback nuclear power plant, Reuters reports. The unit was originally due to close in 1 July 1998 as part of a phased withdrawal from nuclear power in Sweden, to be completed by 2010.

In May last year, the Supreme Administrative Court in Sweden ruled that the closure programme should be reviewed and declared it was suspended. Meanwhile Sydkraft has requested the delay in the closure of its generating unit while the European Commission reaches a decision about whether or not the step is one that is contrary to European Union competition rules. At the asme time the utility is negotiating compensation with the Swediesh government.
