Västerbergslagens Kraft has selected a consortium formed by Kössler of St. Pölten, Austria, and Lloyd Dynamowerke (LDW) of Bremen, Germany to supply turbine-generator equipment for the refurbishment of Ludvika hydro power plant in Sweden.

The US$2.2M contract comprises a horizontal-shaft six-blade oversize Kaplan turbine with a water-cooled brushless synchronous generator at 273rpm and 10.5kV.

Maximum turbine output is 3.6MW and the equipment is designed to enable local islanding at a maximum of 2.7MW during very rare regional grid outages.

The full scope of refurbishment work on Ludvika involves new machine, civil works and control, electrical cooling and ventilation equipment. Civil works include race water tunnel, penstock and necessary alterations to the power house. These other contracts will follow after the machine contract.
