Solar technology supplier SunPower has started construction of a 3.5MW power system at department store holding company Macy's online fulfillment center in Goodyear, Arizona.

The solar system is expected to be completed in March 2011 and deliver the equivalent of 70% of the 600,000sq ft building’s electricity demand.

SunPower’s E19 solar panels are being installed at the site, and the panels will be mounted using the company’s T5 Solar Roof Tile system.

According to estimates provided by the US Environmental Protection Agency, the Goodyear system is expected to offset more than 3,500 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year.

Arizona Public Service, a regional utility serving the Goodyear area, will buy the renewable energy credits associated with the system.

Upon completion of this power system, Macy’s will have more than 12MW of SunPower systems installed at its facilities.
