Solar energy services provider SunEdison and US based power company Duke Energy have activated the final phases of a 17.2MW solar farm in Davidson County, North Carolina.

The project, which includes more than 63,000 photovoltaic solar panels, was constructed in five phases on over 200 acres of land.

SunEdison designed and deployed the power project and will be responsible for the ongoing operations and maintenance of the facility.

The solar project is expected to generate about 28 million kWh of electricity annually, enough energy to power more than 2,600 homes a year.

Duke Energy North Carolina president Brett Carter said that solar energy continues to increase in its importance to North Carolina customers.

"Partnerships, like the one with SunEdison, have allowed Duke Energy to comply with North Carolina’s solar requirements in a cost effective way," Carter said.
