The approximately $800m contract, which is a part of the Duyen Hai 3 coal-fired thermal power station expansion project, has been awarded by Power Generation Corporation 1, a power subsidiary of Vietnam’s state-run utility Vietnam Electricity.
The extension project aims to add 688MW in generation capacity.
Demand for electric power Vietnam is expected to rise more than 10% each year as the economic growth continues.
To meet this demand, the government has initiated a national electric power development master plan to expand the power generation capacity from the 2013 level of 30,597MW to 75,000MW by 2020 and a further expansion to 146,800MW by 2030.
Scheduled to be completed by 2018, the Power Station will receive key equipment, including steam turbine and generator from Toshiba.
Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding will carry out civil construction work while Babcock & Wilcox will provide the boiler for the project. The Black & Veatch will be responsible for technical coordination.
Earlier, Sumitomo has developed the Pha Lai 2 coal-fired power station in Vietnam and supplied equipment to the A Vuong and Buon Kuop hydroelectric power plants.
