SUDAN IS PREPARING A short-list of companies to build the US$1.73B Hamdab dam on the Nile in the country’s north to provide hydro power and flood control.

The Hamdab dam, to be constructed in Merowe, will triple electricity generation in Sudan. The government is expected to complete a short-list of four firms to build the dam from 69 that expressed interest.Seven companies are competing to build the electricity turbines and generators at a cost of US$700M.

Sudan’s electricity generation from thermal and hydroelectric sources is about 500MW. The Rosairis dam, also on the Nile, generates about 280MW, but this often drops to half due to poor water flows in late winter and early summer when the waters are at their lowest.
