The Japan Nuclear Cycle Development Institute and nine power utilities will undertake joint research to develop more economical fast-breeder reactors. They will examine fast-breeder designs different to that used at Monju.
The work will cover fast-breeder reactor fuel and manufacturing processes, as well as reactor cooling methods. Nitrides and other alternatives to oxide fuels will be examined, as will alternatives to lead coolants such as gases.
