SP Energy Networks has commissioned new £22m overhead power line between Legacy, Wrexham and Oswestry, North Shropshire.

The project will boost the security of electricity supplies for more than 130,000 homes and businesses across Mid Wales, North Shropshire and South Wrexham.

Construction has been underway on the project since October 2014, following planning consent in May 2013. The full scheme consists of 5km of underground cables and 21km of overhead wooden pole lines. More than 150 people have been involved in the construction and the design of the project, which is the most significant power upgrade in the region for more than 20 years.

In total SP Energy Networks owns and maintains over 1,200 km of underground cables and nearly 4,000 km of overhead lines across Mid Wales and Dee Valley. Over the next 8 years plans are in place to invest a further £35 million in the local distribution network.

Mark Sobczak, Head of 132kV Programmes at SP Energy Networks said: "This is an important long-term power upgrade for homes and businesses in Mid Wales, North Shropshire and South Wrexham. The electricity network in the region has been maintained to a high standard, and generally we operate a very reliable service. Major infrastructure projects like this are designed to ensure that we can continue to offer those high levels of reliability for decades to come.

"We have worked very closely with officials from Wrexham County Borough Council and Shropshire Council to plan and deliver the programme of works over the last year, and we would also like to thank local communities for their patience during construction. SP Energy Networks will continue to invest in the network over the coming years to deliver the best possible service for the homes and businesses who rely on our network."
