Swedish construction firm Skanska has been awarded a SEK475 million contract by the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority to build a gas pipeline in Puerto Rico.

The project comprises a 42-mile pipeline with a 20-inch diameter. Skanska is responsible for designing, permitting, construction, commissioning and start-up of the pipeline.

Skanska noted that the pipeline will deliver natural gas from the EcoElectrica terminal in Penuelas to a combined cycle plant in Aguirre in southern Puerto Rico.

The project is being carried out in a joint venture between Skanska USA Building and Skanska Latin America, both subsidiaries of the Swedish construction major. Construction on the pipeline is anticipated to begin in February 2008.
