Siemens has won a contract from BrightSource Energy, a developer of solar thermal power plants, to supply two steam turbine generators for the Ivanpah solar electric generating system in San Bernardino County, California.

BrightSource purchased a steam turbine generator from Siemens in December 2008 for Ivanpah’s Unit I, and the recent contract is for the supply of two 133MW steam turbines for the power project’s Units II and III.

The project will consist of three separate solar thermal plants and provide power under separate contracts with Pacific Gas & Electric and Southern California Edison.

Last week, BrightSource received final federal permits from the US Bureau of Land Management for the project.

In February 2010, the company got a conditional commitment from the US Department of Energy for $1.37bn in loan guarantees to support the financing of the Ivanpah project.
