Germany-based solar- energy developer Saferay is planning to construct a 135MW photovoltaic (PV) power plant in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile.

The $300m Carrera Pinto project is seeking approval from the country’s environmental licensing agency Servicio de Evaluacion Ambiental, reports the Bloomberg.

Following the approval, Carrera Pinto project will deploy around 561,000 solar panels, to generate around 240GWh of electricity annually.

The electricity generated from the project will be supplied to Sistema Interconectado Central grid in the country.

Construction of the proposed solar power project is expected to commence by the end of September 2013.

Saferay plans, designs, constructs, installs, and operates PV power plants in Europe and internationally. It also builds projects for third-party investors; and engages in the acquisition of pre-developed or power plant sites.

Currently, Saferay has constructed projects across five continents, with a total installed capacity of about 700MW.
