Commenting on the approval Department of Energy and Climate Change spokesperson said that the onshore wind could provides a significant contribution in arriving at a balanced energy mix for the country.

"This development will enhance our energy security, help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create up to 150 construction jobs," added the spokesperson.

The facility is expected to meet the electricity requirements of 39,700 homes in the region.

RWE Npower has also proposed for the development of a smaller wind farm within the Brechfa forest known as Brechfa east, but it falls below the threshold for a nationally significant infrastructure project.
